World Day for
Audiovisual Heritage 2016

This year's theme: "It's Your Story - Don't Lose It"

The World Day for Audiovisual Heritage has become a key initiative for both UNESCO and the Coordinating Council of Audiovisual Archives Associations (CCAAA) to honour audiovisual preservation professionals and institutions that help to safeguard this heritage for future generations despite the many technical, political, social, financial, and other factors that threaten its survival. Audiovisual archives around the world join together annually on 27 October to celebrate their work with activities and events that not only highlight the vulnerability of this heritage, but also celebrate the often unheralded work of the heritage institutions that protect it.

The theme of the World Day this year is "It's Your Story - Don't Lose It". Every culture, every country has its own story to tell. These stories remind us of our shared humanity and build connections between people. Every story we keep in our archives means that we keep memories alive. Stories should be kept safe, stories create an invaluable archive for future generations – it’s your (and their!) story – don’t lose it!

The eight associations forming the CCAAA (AMIA, ARSC, FIAF, FIAT-IFTA, FOCAL International, IASA, ICA, SEAPAVAA) strongly encourage all their members (and any other institutions) not only to join in the global celebrations of the 2016 World Day on and around 27 October, but also to share the information about their particular events, by filling the quick-and-easy form below (click on « Add a new World Day for Audiovisual Heritage event» below). Your descriptive text can be in the language of your choice (or even better... in several languages), but we ask you to limit it to 500 words max. You can also attach one image per event. Please fill in and submit one form per event. Your contributions will be automatically added to the list of Word day events on this page (the latest added event will appear at the top of the list).

Transylvanian Audiovisual Archive - Sapientia University
The World Day for Audiovisual Heritage in Transylvania
17 November 2015 - 12 November 2035
calea Turzii nr. 4. Sapientia University
Cluj Napoca
Romania

The exhibition opened on the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage is the official debut of the Transylvanian Audiovisual Archive, which aims at the research, preservation and popularization of the Transylvanian audiovisual documents. Through the collection and digitazation of amateur films, photographs and sound recordings we would like to raise public interest for audiovisual documents and an awareness that these documents need to be handled and preseved with care, and kept together with the story of their person who made them.

The exhibition entitled Visible Cluj-Napoca presents the ouvre of a local amateur photographer, who very probably was the first amateur filmmaker in Transylvania, as he made his first film in 1928 with a Cine Kodak camera. The exhibition presents his images in three sections: the City Centre puts in focus images of flanerie, of dwelling in the city and admiring it through the lens of a photo camera. This section also shows the influences of the visual culture of postcards, pictorialist photography and of the architectural avantgarde. The second section presents the Central Park as a realm between the public and the private space, inhabited by different amateur photographers' associations, which produced images characterised by stillness and poetic harmonies, that contrast the dynamic compositions of the Centre-life. The third section concentrates on the space of the family home, on the interiors pictured by the photographer but also on the family portraits made with high artistic ambitions.

The exhibition presents images as pictures on the wall, as moving pictures on the screen or projected on the wall, as viewed with a stereoviewer or as objects decorating a family room.

Republic of Macedonia

On the occasion of the 2016 World Day of Audiovisual Heritage Kinoteka na Makedonija will present a special program of selected short films from 1956 – 1968, that had been written by acknowledged writers at that time. During the formatting years of organized production in Macedonia, due to the shortage of professional cinema writers, well established authors in literature (Slavko Janevski, Petre M. Andreeevski, Dimitar Solev, Vlada Uroshevic, Zhivko Chingo, etc.) were invited to try focusing on cinema, by writing for short feature and documentary films mostly. These short “escapades” resulted in unusually poetic and imaginative descriptions of rural, folk and social themes. Almost half a century later, they give powerful insights in the region’s introduction to industrialization and modern society. In the context of “It’s your story - Don’t lose it” theme, the screenings are intended for an audience interested in discovering and gaining new perspectives on the national cinematography.

One of the main missions of the Biblioteca de Catalunya consists of giving access to the Catalan bibliographic heritage. This is done by many means: from searching into the library catalogue to exhibitions planning, from use of social networks (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Flickr and an own channel of Youtube) to taking part in conferencies, symposiums or professional working groups. The Library also gives access to information management tools as Delicious or Mendeley, so users can obtain and organise information properly on their own way. All in all, the Library works “inwards to outwards”. So far, this is the story of the Biblioteca de Catalunya, and it won’t be lost!
Nevertheless, perhaps it’s time to wonder about the effect that the Library work has in user’s research. Is it a way to interact with them so that we move forward together for both sides benefits?
The Unitat de Sonors i Audiovisuals of the Biblioteca de Catalunya has a relatively recent experience in contacting professionals of library-related fields and sound & AV researchers. These contacts have brought big benefits to the library, considering that the feedback received from both kind of “users” has increased our wisdom and our collections value alike. And so good, this is a selection of the contribution of some of the Biblioteca de Catalunya researchers to our story. And they won’t be lost either.

Poetic documentary that talks about the birth and decay of the physical body of the films. This documentary rescues the beauty of celulloid films, in the form of digitalized fragments of many formats made with nitrate, acetate and polyester. It’s a song about memory, memories, forgetfulness and human evocation.
Our mirrors: the moving images that erode to the extent of becoming dust. The film preservationists fight to prevent it.

MTVA remembers the events of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956.
17 November 2015 - 12 November 2035
Budapest
Hungary

MTVA remembers the events of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956; we would like to record, collect and save the memories of the events of 60 years ago, preserve the most important moments of these days of Hungarian history. We hope that these materials will help us to organize the commemoration in a way worthy of the Revolution.

On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, MTVA invited Hungarian people living all around the world to present their individual stories, photos or objects in connection with the Revolution. The aim of this campaign called 1956 through my eyes was to show the events of our War of Independence which have influenced the life and fate of thousands of Hungarian people.

The viewers have offered us pictures, stories which made the murderous 50s, our glorious revolution, the battle for independence, the fear during the flight and the reprisal terror unforgettable. An almost forgotten photo, an old letter found in a drawer or any object you haven’t wanted to present up to now, can become part of our national remembrance. At the 60th Anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution, the viewers tell their stories and send these photos we can publish and present. This way, we can see how the history became part of the life of our viewers.

Using the materials received from our viewers, we make a program in which we present and preserve personal stories and objectives of those who took part in the Revolution. MTVA preserves the interviews in its Archives; they will be free for research. This way, we will help historians to further elaborate the history of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956.

A worldwide survey of legal deposit for audiovisual materials
17 November 2015 - 12 November 2035
Worldwide

On the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage 2016, IFLA's Audiovisual and Multimedia Section and IASA's National Archives Section join forces to launch a new survey of audiovisual deposit laws.

Why a survey? Our audiovisual heritage needs to be preserved in order to provide universal access to information. But there is little information on the state of legal deposit for audiovisual materials around the world. We hope that such information on worldwide practices will help individual countries to obtain or improve their own legal deposit legislation.

We need your help. To create the new AV Legal Deposit register, for each country about which you have knowledge, please complete this short questionnaire:
Legal deposit questionnaire

And, note that we need information even for those countries that do not have legal deposit legislation for audiovisual materials. By completing the questionnaire, you will help to build a useful reference source. Information provided will be published online by IASA and by IFLA as a permanent reference to legal deposit legislation, country by country.

Thank you for your contributions to this initiative!

“Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos” (Three Godless Years)
17 November 2015 - 12 November 2035

Through mutual cooperation, the Philippines and Japan have been learning to understand each other’s culture. 2016 marks the 60th Philippines-Japan Friendship Day and an important part of the shared history of these two countries is the Japanese occupation of the Philippines during World War II. A few Philippine films tackle this time in history but one of the most prominent ones is “Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos” (Three Godless Years).

It is a distinctive historical film because it depicts the Japanese occupation by revolving around the life of a Filipina and a Philippine-born Japanese soldier. Instead of portraying the opposing nationalities as antagonists and protagonists, it represented what war does to everyone, regardless of race.

Based on our research, the film prints housed in the Cultural Center of the Philippines are the last copy of this awarded film in the country that is in fairly good condition. Because of this, the ABS-CBN Film Archives took haste in restoring this film of great social, cultural, and artistic value.

Films such as these not only enrich our culture but also allow us to understand our history through a different perspective. As an archive, we are grateful to be able to preserve stories such as these.

Hawaiian Media Makers Conference & HIFF 2016 screening of Preserving Olympic Dreams and Plantation Memories

Honolulu
U.S.

In the early part of November, ʻUluʻulu Hawaii’s official state archive for moving images has two events that coincide with World Day for Audiovisual Heritage.

On November 2nd, ʻUluʻulu will participate in the Hawaiian Media Makers conference. The conference provides an arena for Hawaii media making professionals to learn different platforms, connect with others in the field, and bring Hawaiian media to a global audience.

And on November 6th, for the fourth consecutive year, we will be presenting at the Hawaii International Film Festival. This year we will showcase “Preserving Olympic Dreams and Plantation Memories," a restored and digitized edition of the 1984 documentary, "Coach," originally produced by the Center for Labor Education & Research (CLEAR) as part of CLEAR's Rice & Roses television series. The half hour program tells the story of how Maui plantation kids, banned from the whites-only swimming pool, trained in irrigation ditches in the 1930s. Finding strength and determination through the sport, the group went on to win national and even Olympic championships under Coach Soichi Sakamoto.

This special HIFF program highlights a collaborative preservation and digitization effort (the Rice & Roses Digitization Project), sponsored by 'Ulu 'ulu, Hawai’i Council for the Humanities (HCH), and CLEAR that will provide public access to hundreds of hours of never before seen film, videos, and full length interviews that document Hawaiʻi's plantation era. The digital files will be available to educators, students, and researchers to bring images of a bygone era to life and enrich the understanding of Hawaiʻi plantation and swimming history.

Harry Orvomaa collection of Jewish records
17 November 2015 - 12 November 2035
Suomen äänitearkisto
Helsinki
Finland

Before World War Two, there was an extensive production of Jewish recordings in Eastern Europe. Because of the holocaust, many of them are extremely rare today. Suomen Äänitearkisto, the Finnish Institute for Recorded Sound, owns a collection of historical Jewish 78rpm records from many countries. It is named after the late record producer and collector Harry Orvomaa, who donated a large number of records to the archive. The collection consists of about 500 recordings, c. 1910-1955, and has now been digitized with the support of the Kone Foundation.

The catalogue of the Orvomaa collection will now be published on the Dismarc website (Discovering Music Archives). Label scans and many audio samples are included. Selected items from the collection will also be available in Europeana Sounds. Highlights of the collection include interpretations by famous cantors and actors from the Jewish theatres in Warsaw, Bucharest, Vienna and New York. There is also a recording of Jacob Gordin’s famous Yiddish play Mirele Efros, by Ester Steinbock, who appeared in the Jewish theatre company in Viipuri (Viborg) in the 1930s.

To study the collection, go to the Dismarc site, choose “advanced search” and “archive=HOC”.

The BFI National Archive's lastest restoration is of the travelogue Ruins of Palmyra and Baalbek (1938), shot in Technicolor by the great cinematographer Jack Cardiff. The film has unexpectedly become a valuable historical and archaeological record of the Arch of Triumph in Palmyra, Syria, which – at the time of filming – had already been “wrecked by a succession of wars” but managed to retain its splendour. However, in October 2015, the iconic arch was blown up by Isis and very little of it remains intact today. Lumière! The Invention of Cinema
17 November 2015 - 12 November 2035
Underground Passage, via Rizzoli

An exhibition conceived and curated by the Institut Lumière of Lyon, and brought outside France for the very first time. The story of the family that invented the Cinématographe: Antoine, painter and photographer, his two sons Louis and Auguste, so capable that, when still adolescents, they take the reins of the family business.
It is Louis, aged just 17, who invents the famous Etiquette Bleue, a very sensitive photographic plate, for that era, allowing the instant capture of reality for the very first time. The Lumière factory is the first photographic industry in Europe, and by 1884 already employs more than 250 people.
During those same years a race of patents and inventions between Europe and the United States breaks out: the photography of movement is the subject of relentless research, an epic story which we are able to recount also thanks to the contribution of the collections of the Museo Nazionale del Cinema in Turin and the Cinémathèque Royale de Belgique.
It will be Louis who invents the Cinématographe: the Lumière brothers are the last inventors and at the same time the first authors and programmers of cinema. And we don’t just owe the Cinématographe to the Lumières, but also a series of extraordinary inventions, including the beautiful Autochromes (the first colour photograph) and 3D projection.
All this and much more, in an exhibition that takes us to a long forgotten place in Bologna, and to the origins of the modern gaze on the world.

Film Screening: "Wedding Bells for Hedy"
17 November 2015 - 12 November 2035
Cinema, Hong Kong Film Archive
Hong Kong
China

Wedding Bells for Hedy is sequel to Doe's delicately crafted Our Sister Hedy (1957) that scrutinises the myth of marital bliss to minute detail, by first training the lens on Big Sis (Mu Hong) who is racked with insecurity over her husband's suspected infidelity, then moving on to Second Sis (Julie Yeh Feng) and her husband (Peter Chen Ho) whose unfounded jealousy opens a can of worms. Yet it is Hedy (Jeanette Lin Tsui) who steals the show, the smooth operator who helps iron out the marital troubles of her sisters. Sparks fly and tempers flare when their opposing temperaments and likes and dislikes collide in a tour de force of witty, barbed dialogues. The ending of their dying father fulfilling his final wish by walking Hedy down the aisle on her wedding day does get a tad overly sentimental, but fairly so. Hong Kong Film Archive acquired a copy of 35mm and a copy of 16mm from Cathay Organisation in Singapore in 2004. This Digital Beta was scanned from an incomplete 35mm print with missing 7th and 8th reels amounting to about 20 minutes of visuals. We took the images on the 16mm film with a high-resolution digital camera and created four sets of pictorial storyline with brief textual descriptions. Although this is an incomplete version, the chance to view Hedy and her sisters in all its Eastman Colour glory more than makes up for this slight disappointment.

Archives in Motion Workshops (AIM) and Screenings
17 November 2015 - 12 November 2035
National Albanian Film Archive (Archivi Qendror Shtetror I Filmit) and the Marubi Academy of Film and Multimedia (Akademia e Film dhe Multimedias Marubi)
Tirana
Albania

When the Albanian Cinema Project (ACP) celebrates the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage it emphasizes the word world. More than 70 archivists, filmmakers, and students from around the globe gathered in Tirana, Albania from October 17-28 for the Archives in Motion (AIM) Workshops. The event brings together archivists from the Balkans to share information and new techniques in media preservation, and bring attention to the amazing quality of Albanian cinema and the urgent need to save these endangered films.

Held at the Albanian National Film Archive (Archivi Qendror Shtetror I Filmit) and the Marubi Academy of Film and Multimedia (Akademia e Film dhe Multimedias Marubi) the 2 weeks have been filled with intensive workshops, hands-on training with analog and digital media, demos of video and film digitization, and screenings of one-of-a-kind film prints on 35mm and new documentaries constructed out of archival footage from the Balkans. Equally important has been the rare opportunity for prolonged conversations with colleagues from the Balkans, Europe, North America and Asia. Saving our shared cinematic heritage is a mission that exists beyond borders.

The ambitious curriculum covered handling and identifying photochemical film prints and legacy videotapes, to a range of techniques for digitizing archival moving images, to emerging best practices for caring for digital files. On the first day of the workshop, Skip Elsheimer from A/V Geeks (USA) led the participants through a DIY way to scan film using a Lomography Smartphone Scanner. Obviously, the results do not match the quality of professional film scanners but the exercise laid the theoretical basis for how scanners work, which came in handy when participants worked with a Lasergraphic’s ScanStation Personal, brought to AIM by Koushik Bhattacharya from Quality Matters in Mumba. Plus, everyone got to get their hands on film on the first day! Jonathan Farbowitz, a recent graduate of NYU's  MIAP program, led a training session in the philosophies of digital preservation by presenting some of the risks to digital media as well as a number of solutions such as redundancy, refreshing files, and migration. Gabor Pinter  (Hungarian Filmlab/Magyar Filmabor) presented a case study on the digital restoration of a rare Michael Curtiz film The Undesirable (1915) to discuss the ethical challenges film restorers now face thanks to the ability of digital technology to alter moving images beyond their original look. Nancy Goldman, of the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, in collaboration with Kate Dollenmayer (Wende Museum) and Lindsay Zarwell (USHMM), led multiple sessions on cataloging moving images including sections on the importance of adopting widely used standards and the importance of using proper filenaming conventions. Reto Kromer, from AV Preservation (Switzerland), addressed proper storage conditions for long term survival of film and video, and how to select the appropriate file format for digitizing media. David Walsh (Imperial War Museum) addressed evolving best practices for film preservation, and Daniel Borosa of Croation Radio TV reported on a survey of the region's TV archives. A roundtable on the feasibility of collaborative projects will close the workshops.

Audiovisual seminar: mobile applications in culture

Time: 10.00 – 16.00

On Wednesday, the day before World Day for Audiovisual Heritage in National Audiovisual Institute (NInA) organises an audiovisual seminar on the topic of creating simple technological solutions in small libraries, culture centers and other cultural institutions.

The easier access to the Internet, prevalence of mobile devices, such as smartphones or tablets, and the development of new technologies have caused a change in the way of communication between the users and the institution, but also have revolutionized the way of approaching cultural education, sharing and spreading knowledge on the institution’s resources and projects. The use of applications that are functional and adjusted to the needs of the users in cultural or artistic projects may become an important element for building local community, enhancing engagement of receivers and making the offer more attractive.

‘Dekalog I’ by Krzysztof Kieślowski (1988):  Film screening and discussion

Time: 18.00

On the World Day of Audiovisual Heritage National Audiovisual Institute (NInA), in order to remind how unique is the Polish film heritage, will start a cycle of 10 meetings with Krzysztof Kieślowski’s ‘Dekalog’. The series of screenings and discussions with ethicists, philosophers, culture and religion experts will be opened with the screening of ‘Dekalog I’ and discussion on the role technology plays in our lives and trust we have in it.

Work in progress: il Portale del Cinema Muto Italiano
17 November 2015 - 12 November 2035
on line
worldwide

In recent decades Italian silent cinema has been intensively studied. A lot of film and non-film  materials have been brought to light, thanks to the perseverance of scholars and to the endeavors of institutions. The commitment in promoting the accessibility of this heritage material has become concrete via events and publications and now it is beginning to be accessible through several websites of online databases. Nevertheless, the resources relating to this period of cinema history do not always succeed in reaching all potential users.

With this purpose, the CSC - Cineteca Nazionale, with the support of the Direzione Cinema of the MiBACT (Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism), has undertaken the project “Portale del Cinema Muto Italiano”, conceived as an institutional showcase for the institutions dealing with the preservation of the Italian silent cinema heritage and as a meeting place between objects (films, photographs, posters, archival papers, periodicals) and interpretation systems (historical, filmographic and critical studies).

The structure of the Portal is articulated as the following:

Exhibitions and Itineraries. Educational section, conceived for the promotion of different topics relating to Italian silent cinema history. At present three itineraries have been developed: Leopoldo Fregoli e gli esordi del cinematografo in Italia, Storia del cinema muto in pillole (History of the Italian Silent Cinema “in small doses”) and Ritratti, a photographic selection of portraits of actors and actresses.

Materials. The complete list of the documents made accessible, such as films, stills and photographs, posters, archival documents, etc... At present about fifty films from the CSC-Cineteca Nazionale collection have been selected and more than a hundred photographs from the Photo and Stills Archive. A continuing implementation is expected, also by linking documents made available by other film archives.

Filmographies. The first contribution here is the digitized version of the filmography in 21 volumes by Aldo Bernardini and Vittorio Martinelli, Il cinema muto italiano (CSC- Nuova ERI, 1980-1996). Hopefully, further and complementary filmographies will be included.

Periodicals and monographs. It contains a list of periodicals and a selection of monographs, at present those available at the Biblioteca L. Chiarini of the CSC in Roma and the Bibliomediateca M. Gromo of the Museo Nazionale del Cinema in Torino. The goal is to extend the links to other important libraries and to link the digitized documents.

Bibliography and studies. A basic bibliography has been elaborated, together with a selection of articles from the periodical «Bianco e Nero». It is planned to develop a gradually updated bibliography and to create a sub-section containing the links to the web resources such as websites, databases, blogs, etc...

The “Portale del Cinema Muto Italiano is a completely “in-house” project, curated by the CSC in Rome. It takes advantage of Silvio Alovisio (Università di Torino) and Luca Mazzei (Università di Roma Tor Vergata) as scientific consultants.

The development is in progress and open to proposals and contributions: several contacts with institutions have already started.

Many others are expected, suggestions and proposals for contributions are welcome!

Special screenings of recently restored films
17 November 2015 - 12 November 2035
La Filmoteca (Sala Luis G. Berlanga)
Valencia
Spain

[EN] On the occasion of the 2016 World day for Audiovisual Heritage, La Filmoteca de Valencia (CulturArts IVAC) will organize free screenings of  "La industria de la seda" (1920) y "El monje de Porta-Coeli" (Ramón Orrico, 1926), two silent films recovered in the 1990s and newly restored. The screenings will be accompanied by piano music composed and performed by Arcadi Valiente.  No intertitles, screenplays or complementary technical indications were found in the case of "El monje...", so the reconstruction had to be based on Joan Arola's poem La sílfida del acueducto, which inspired the film.

"La industria de la seda" is an information documentary commisioned by the Ministry of Development Measures that describes the procedures and works leading to the obtention of the highly appreciated silk tissue, a major industry in Valencia over the 1920s and still prominent.

Both restoration works were accomplished thanks to the original negative prints, miraculously preserved over the years in very unstable climate conditions. Digitization at 2k was subsequently undergone.

A press conference will be hold also to spread the message of the UNESCO and communicate the motto: It's your story- Don't lose it.

The major attraction of DANTON, which is based on the play of the same name, are the performances of Fritz Kortner and Gustav Gründgens. DANTON is one of the few available documents that showcases Kortner’s extraordinary command of language and rhetorical power. The Deutsches Filminstitut – DIF has been creating and continues to create digital versions of selected films from the national film heritage for theatrical distribution to ensure that in the future these films can still be projected in theatres that are only equipped with digital projectors. DANTON has been digitally restored as part of this project in 2015 and is now available for theatres as a DCP through our distributor. This project has been funded by the federal commissioner of culture and media.

From 12:00 to 16:30, you’ll be able to attend various presentations and activities:

depots and archival activities: Take a look at the so-called ‘high depot’; there will also be an explanation of collection items that are related to projection and film equipment.

tour of EYE Study: Since its opening in early October, EYE Study has quickly become the best place to do research on Dutch film culture, and on the EYE collection in particular. You will have access to the largest film library in the Netherlands, and you can also watch all of the digitized films from the collection. But there’s much more than that: take the tour!

This open day offers an opportunity to take a look at the new home of the EYE collection, as well as the various depots, studios, and offices. Our specialists will be on hand to answer your questions about film and film-related heritage.

Admission is free, and reservations for this afternoon are not necessary.

Malta

On the occasion of the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage, the recording of almost all bells in Malta will be deposited at the National Archives of Malta.

Mr Rayden Mizzi will donate a digital copy of his recordings (audio and visual) of bells in Malta and Gozo.  In this project, started in 2006, Mr Mizzi included over 3,600 recordings featuring some 1,200 different bells in 375 different locations (mostly churches but include also other venues).

The recordings feature the use of bells in several occasions within the life of the local communities, varying from the celebratory use during the annual festive celebrations to funerals and commemoration of the deceased.

Bell ringing has been a key constituent of the Maltese soundscape for hundreds of years. In his autobiography "The Moon's a Balloon", David Niven claimed that "yells, bells and smells" was a derogatory expression used by "jocks" to describe Malta.

En record de Joan Baptista Bernat i Sarró.
17 November 2015 - 12 November 2035
Teatre Municipal de Lloret - 20:00 h
Lloret de Mar
Spain

Die letzte Chance Leopold Lindtberg · Suisse · 1945 · 113' · v.o. s-t fr.

It’s your story – Don’t Lose It”.

The Jalón Ángel's Photographic Archive wants to show its history and works even harder today in the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage (WDAVH), sponsored by UNESCO and organized by the CCAAA (Co-ordinating Council of Audiovisual Archives Associations). The theme this year is "It’s Your Story – Don’t Lose It".

To celebrate this day The Jalón Ángel's Photographic Archive has created a video with some of the photographs we have on the beginnings of San Valero School. This centre was created by Jalón Ángel.

In this video we show the first years of the San Valero Group which first educational centre was the San Valero School, and now it has 5 centres: Secondary school, Audiovisual Centre, Online learning, the Dominican Republic Centre and San Jorge University.

We will publish this video the next October 27th on our social networks and in every centre of San Valero Group.

Taiyu pian refers to the Taiwanese-dialect films shot between 1955 and 1981. In these local productions, the characters speak only Taiwanese (a.k.a. Taiwanese Minnan or Hokkien) despite their various backgrounds in the story. The inception of Taiyu pian‘s popularity started with Ho Chi-ming’s Xue Pinggui and Wang Baochuan in 1956, a folk-legend film trilogy starred by a local Taiwanese opera troupe. Its phenomenal success established the golden age of Taiyu pian, marking this year the 60th anniversary of this historical film heritage. In the 20-odd years of the vibrant Taiwanese-dialect film industry, over 1000 films were produced; unfortunately, less than 200 of them have survived and been preserved at the Taiwan Film Institute.

To coincide with the spirit of World Day for Audiovisual Heritage, Taiwan Film Institute will host two major open air screenings outside Taipei’s historical landmark, Taipei Zhongshan Hall. The screenings will present TFI’s newly restored Taiwanese-dialect films, Brother Wang and Brother Liu Tour Taiwan (1959) and The Fantasy of the Deer Warrior (1961).

Right before the screening on 29th, a ceremony celebrating the WDAH will announce TFI’s new restored classics in 2016, and pay homage to the generous sponsors of the restorations and donors of film equipment and materials. Taiwan’s Minister of Culture, Ms. Cheng Li-chiun, will also attend the ceremony and give a speech to acknowledge the significance of preserving our national film heritage.

Don’t lose it.)
