UNESCO's second Global Policy Forum on documentary heritage and disaster risk reduction
The MoW Programme Secretariat is organizing its 2nd MoW Global Policy Forum on Disaster Risk Reduction and Management for Sustainable Preservation of Documentary Heritage on 12-13 May 2020 at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France.
UNESCO, through its Memory of the World (MoW) Programme, started coordinating a series of Global Policy Forums (GPF) supported by Japanese Funds-in-Trust (JFIT), focusing on a strategically important aspect of documentary heritage.
The forum is part of the MoW Secretariat’s strategic support to policy makers, memory institutions, and other stakeholders seeking to implement the UNESCO Recommendation concerning the preservation of, and access to, documentary heritage including in digital form. In this respect, it will also attempt to link national, regional and international efforts at safeguarding documentary heritage to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly in light of SDG 11, target 4 on strengthening “efforts to protect and safeguard the world’s cultural … heritage” and SDG 16, target 10 on ensuring public access to information and protecting fundamental freedoms.
The 1st GPF took place on 11 December 2018. Its focus was on using disaster risk reduction as a preventive or preservation strategy for documentary heritage. It ended in success to raise awareness and issues on this matter.
In the 2nd Global Policy Forum, we aim to build the momentum towards articulating a global policy framework for disaster risk reduction and management as a means to sustainable preservation of documentary heritage. In this regard, the forum will aim to:
- Build consensus among stakeholders in strengthening policy and strategic interventions on disaster risk reduction and management for preservation of documentary heritage;
- Analyze and specify key strategic activities to be implemented by the MoW Programme, in cooperation with other stakeholders, in this regard;
- Strengthen the emerging global partnership on disaster risk reduction as a strategy for documentary heritage preservation and accessibility.

This forum is open to all interested experts and stakeholders wishing to participate at their own cost. However, within the framework of the Funds-in-Trust (FIT) project supported by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), the MoW Secretariat will identify particular experts, mostly drawn from networks of national MoW committees in Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS), who could be given travel and upkeep support.
